Theme: Love Your Butt. Check Your Guts
Project Execution: 1st January to 31st May 2017 (5 months, inclusive of preparatory and planning phase, training workshops, pre-event/event/post event activities)
This is the 8th year of EMPOWERED’s CCASTP since the project was launched in 2010. To raise the awareness and screening campaign to another level and to reach out a wider population, we decided to make CCASTP 2017 differently yet still carry the missions of delivering cancer education, prevention and early detection, and serving the poor. Therefore, our very first Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign in the mall themed “Love Your Butt. Check Your Guts” was launched in May 2017. To make it a success, EMPOWERED’s team has spent numerous times on approaching and meeting with both government and private bodies for collaborations, educational training, internal discussions and project monitoring prior to events.

EMPOWERED to associate with professional partners, promote colorectal cancer awareness and advocacy through well-planned social media campaign, and share awareness day information through official website and accounts.

With the long-term partnership with International Medical University (IMU), EMPOWERED always able to recruit good volunteers from the school. Volunteer numbers and requirements, roles and responsibilities, training contents and schedules are planned to succeed the campaign.
Student volunteers are trained as Educator/Facilitator/Usher to conduct education of colorectal cancer, and facilitating the event to ensure programs run smoothly. Educational posters and props are designed and well content by the student volunteers under the supervision and guidance of EMPOWERED educational team and doctors.
1st Training Workshop for International Medical University (IMU) Student Volunteers
Date: 30th March 2017
Time: 6.30pm – 9.30pm
1st Training Workshop planned specifically for Educators and Facilitators, as they are the key person to convey education of colorectal cancer and messages on campaign day.
We have recruited 24 student volunteers from different courses who met the pre-qualifications for the 1st Training Workshop. They are given the outline of the booth content which were planned beforehand by EMPOWERED’s team and doctor advisers, and lecture on colorectal cancer for their learning and preparation works.
24 student volunteers are assigned into different booth themes respectively; particular references and “homework” are given to them for the making of educational posters and teaching
2nd Training Workshop for International Medical University (IMU) Student Volunteers
Date: 13th April 2017
Time: 6.30pm – 9.00pm
The 2nd Training Workshop was planned for Educators and Facilitators to review on the content of educational posters and teaching on presentation skills.
Each team submitted their work on time. After reviewed the 1st draft of educational posters, specific comments for each theme are delivered to improve on the teaching materials one by one. Template of poster design is given to each team right after.
To ensure all messages of the themes deliver accurately, we do not only depend on educational posters but also presentation skills. Educators and Facilitators are trained on how to present the posters, do the teaching and convey precise messages to the public, as well as interaction with the participants.
Improvement of team “Homework” is assigned and they are required to practice the presentation among themselves before attending the next training for role-play.
3rd Training Workshop for International Medical University (IMU) Student Volunteers

3rd Training Workshop was planned to review the 2nd draft of educational posters, training for educational booth games and role-play presentation.
To make the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign a fun learning experience EMPOWERED and team has tailored few educational booth games to conduct on the campaign day. We believe by fun interaction activities public are much easier to absorb the learning and messages. Educators and Facilitators are trained on how to facilitate the educational booth games and the flow, as each of the booth themes and games are planned in sequence.
Following in the training, role-play presentation was conducted. This session was hosted by Dr. Christina, the president to ensure clear and accurate messages of colorectal cancer education are delivered to the public without failing. Scripts for each booth are designed for the student volunteers in order to conduct the teaching smoothly.
4th Training Workshop for International Medical University (IMU) Student Volunteers

Time: 6.30pm – 9.30pm
4th Training Workshop as well as final training for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign content rundown of the event, roles responsibilities and allocation briefing, role-play and presentation, and group practice.
We manage to recruit total of 60 student volunteers to fill up other roles including ushers and mascots to facilitate the programs and booth activities on the event day.
The 4th Training Workshop was hosted by Vicee Lo, the Campaign Manager, starting from event rundown, briefing on each roles responsibilities and allocation, particular tasks and timing, role-play on opening gimmick and booth presentation, and reminder for event day.
Then, everyone breaking into groups according to roles and led by assigned student leaders and EMPOWERED staff for details discussion and role-play session. The 4th Training Workshop dismissed after the fruitful group practice.

EMPOWERED’s “Love Your Butt. Check Your Guts” Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign 2017 strategically target the mass (all range of citizen in Malaysia) through a well-designed fun and education packed event with the theme of sailor and pirate. The location of this mass outreach awareness campaign was at Level G Boulevard, Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya. It is a two-day event and we have reached out approximately 1,000 people each day.
In line with EMPOWERED’s vision and mission, we aim to advocate the mass public about early detection and preventing colorectal cancer.
Through this awareness campaign, we continue to collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organizations to achieve cancer advocacy and early detection in the country.
Meantime, through effective media partnerships and online activities, we achieved extensive public exposure to highlight the “Love Your Butt. Check Your Guts” Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign and deliver its key messages to reach the mass amount of Malaysians across the country.

It was also the Official Launch Day of CCASTP 2017, we are honored to invite Dr. Rozlan Bin Ishak, Deputy Director of the Kuala Lumpur State Health Office (JKWPKL&P) to officiate the launch.
Over the launch, we had educational address by invited surgeon/oncologist, testimonials from colorectal cancer survivors, keynote messages from the VIP guests, and media advocacy through a media forum.
The opening ceremony was immediately followed by highly energised two-day awareness campaign activities.

Collaboration: Jabatan Kesihatan Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya (JKWPKL&P)

This year, we have stronger and further collaboration with State Health Office (JKWPKL&P), together to succeed the Colorectal Cancer Screening Workshop 2017.
The meeting was conducted to establish the issues faced with regards to colorectal cancer advocacy in Malaysia and the proposal of collaborating for screening workshop to lighten the issues.
It was a great discussion and with mutual agreement, we proposed to run the Colorectal Cancer Screening Workshop 2017 in one of the Klinik Kesihatan which under governs of JKWPKL&P.
By introduction of JKWPKL&P, we had our first meeting with PKD Kepong and venue host at Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang.
Discussion on the floor plan, logistics, screening process flow, manpower assists and other details was addressed in the meeting.
With mutual agreement, we confirmed the collaboration and the venue for screening workshop 2017 was set at Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang, Kepong.
This fruitful meeting ended with its objectives achieved through agenda that was discussed.

Selected volunteers are trained as Registrar/FIT-Kit Instructor/Usher to conduct interview, FIT-Kit tutorial, and facilitating on the screening day process flow to ensure program run smoothly. Interview questions, tutorials and role-play are trained comprehensively by Dr. Christina, the president and EMPOWERED’s team together with all volunteers.
We manage to select 16 volunteers from IMU, 8 volunteers from MSD Internship, 3 volunteers from general by recommendation to assist in the screening workshop over the month.
Every volunteer are assigned to specific roles based on their voluntary and capability.
After gone through the screening workshop floor plan, process flow, screening criteria, break-out session volunteer join into groups according to their role for details training.
We prepared different training materials for each role including specific handout and model, and assigned respective EMPOWERED staff to lead the group for details training and role-play. Role-play session was practiced in three languages as well as dialect to meet the aspects of the community crowds.

Target: to achieve 250 qualified participants
After several meetings and agreement, we finally decided the Colorectal Cancer Screening Workshop 2017 venue set at Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang, this also met the target achievement of we wanted to serve Kepong community this year. To rise up our screening workshop and more open to public aspect, we executed a new model with our 8 years essence screening system and flow.
We targeted 250 of mass public to participate in the Colorectal Cancer Screening Workshop 2017. However, we had 428 participants registered in total after 8 sessions of screening workshop and 398 are eligible for FOBT (Faecal Occur Blood Test) test. We aim to advocate the mass public about early detection and preventing colorectal cancer. We continue to collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organizations to achieve cancer advocacy and early detection in the country.

Date: 13th July – 3rd August 2017 (Every Tuesday and Thursday)
Time: 8am – 5pm
Venue: Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang, Kepong
FIT-Kits collection and screening are carried out simultaneously. Participants are given 2 – 3 days to collect stool samples and return the used FIT-Kit to EMPOWERED’s counter at Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang on the date given. Patients who returned their FIT-kit will receive a second filled goodie bag and a lucky draw number as reward.
Collection counter operate until afternoon on every Tuesday and Thursday during the month. To ensure the compliance, EMPOWERED’s staff will call up the participant if they did not show up for return of FIT-Kit.
At the end of the collection day, EMPOWERED’s staff to send the samples (FIT-Kits) to Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang’s lab immediately for processing. Results of the test are given back to EMPOWERED on the following screening/collection day.

Dates of breaking bad news was set on 18th, 22nd and 23rd August, executed by EMPOWERED’s team and Medical Officer Dr. Fadhlina from Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang.
After compiled all the positive results and synchronised name list with medical officer in-charge, EMPOWERED’s staff call up the (positive results) participants to inform date and time of receiving report at Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang.
Participants first have to register themselves with Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang, then check-in with EMPOWERED’s staff, receive a green colour sticker and que for their turn.
Medical officer call-in the registered patients (green colour sticker) into consultation room to receive report. Medical officer will explain the result and next procedure, then issue a referral letter to the patient for further hospital visit.
After receiving news from the medical officer, patient to get hospital visit appointment date from EMPOWERED’s staff upon check-out. Hospital visit dates will be given accordingly.
The important task for this appointment is to comfort any subject who may be traumatized with the news and answer any questions that they may have regarding the hospital visit and Patient Support Program. EMPOWERED’s staff were trying their very best to convince these subjects to make themselves available for the first hospital visits on the date given. To cater the total number of 164 subjects who have blood in their stool, the first hospital visits are split into 3 locations which are Hospital Selayang, Hospital Ampang and Hospital Kuala Lumpur at different dates.
Releases of negative results are done 25th August onwards.

This is essentially a support program for our beneficiaries. EMPOWERED recognize that beneficiaries, who need to undergo treatment, require emotional and moral support throughout their medical journey.
In this Patient Support Program, we make arrangements for the residents to be picked up from their home doorsteps for all hospital appointments and ensure that they receive much needed companionship and psychological support from our trained volunteers.
With JKWPKL&P great support, EMPOWERED able to liaise and arrange appointments efficiently with hospitals for patients with blood in stool. We are in collaboration with Hospital Ampang, Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Selayang for following hospital visits.
